Garden lighting in Corby

Garden lighting in Corby

Corby has two very different kinds of garden. On the New Town estates built for steelworkers, such as Kingswood, Lodge Park, Beanfield and Danesholme, gardens are established, with fences, sheds and patios already in place. At Priors Hall Park, planned for more than 5,000 homes, many gardens are handed over as bare, compacted plots. We design low-voltage lighting for both: step and riser lights, uplighters on trees and walls, and soft light around seating. All prices here are guides until we have visited and fixed them in writing.

With an established garden, lighting is usually added without lifting paving, using wall lights, spike lights in beds and cables run in ducts along the borders. With a new plot, the opportunity is bigger. If the lighting is drawn at the same time as the patio and paths, ducts can run to every corner before anything is laid, and lights can be built into steps and low walls. That costs far less effort than retrofitting once the garden is finished.

Corby specifically

What makes Corby different

Corby sits on the Northampton Sand ironstone, and large areas around the town were opencast quarried and restored. Within one garden the ground can change from natural ironstone to clay or fill, which affects how deep we can dig for ducts and whether a buried uplighter will drain. We dig before we design, so the cable routes avoid the worst ground. Close to the Willow Brook, controls stay well up. Corby has nine conservation areas, mostly the older villages, and its only Article 4 direction concerns houses in multiple occupation.

The most common Corby request is a Priors Hall Park semi or detached house with a bare rear plot. The scheme usually lights the step down from the patio doors, puts a couple of wall lights on the house or fence, adds path lights to the back gate and leaves empty ducts to the borders for later. On older estates it is more often wall and spike lights added to a finished garden.

Permissions in Corby

  1. PlanningGarden lighting does not need planning permission, but a new outdoor mains circuit is notifiable electrical work, so it is done and certified by a registered electrician. Keep lights pointing down and away from neighbours' windows. Listed buildings and the Corby conservation area have tighter rules, so we check your address before anything is designed.

Questions

Garden lighting in Corby: questions

How much does garden lighting cost in Corby?
A path, step and border lighting scheme typically costs up to about £1,500 installed. A full multi-zone garden scheme is £2,000–£6,000 or more, and a new outdoor circuit is priced separately. These are guides; the fixed price is confirmed in writing after our visit.
Does Corby's Article 4 direction or a conservation area affect lighting?
Garden lighting does not need planning permission. Corby's only Article 4 direction, at Kingswood, controls houses in multiple occupation and does not touch garden work. A new outdoor mains circuit is notifiable electrical work and is done and certified by a registered electrician. Keep lights aimed down and away from neighbours' windows, which matters on close-built estates.
Our Priors Hall Park garden is bare. Should lighting go in first?
The ducts should. Laying them before the patio, paths and turf means cables never sit under slabs and can reach any part of the garden. The fittings themselves can go in at the same time or later, once you know how you use the space.
Does restored or filled ground cause problems for lighting?
It can. Fill may contain rubble that makes trenching slow, and pockets of clay hold water around buried fittings. Digging test holes first lets us route ducts through better ground and choose wall or spike fittings where buried uplighters would struggle.
